Banner Night, a New 84-Game Era and the Race for Lord Stanley

September 29: the puck drops on the NHL's first 84-game season.
A banner rises in Raleigh. A new coach behind Edmonton’s bench. The No. 1 pick making his debut in Toronto. And for the first time since 1993-94, 84 games on the schedule. The 2026-27 NHL season opens Tuesday, September 29 — here’s everything you need before the first drop.

Banner Night: The Hurricanes Begin Their Title Defense

It has been 20 years since the last Carolina celebration, and Rod Brind'Amour gets to watch his captain hang the franchise’s second championship banner before the opening puck drops. The Hurricanes capped a dominant 16-3 playoff run on June 14 with a 3-0 Game 6 shutout of the Vegas Golden Knights — the fewest games needed to win the Cup since 1988. Brandon Bussi stopped all 22 shots; Taylor Hall scored his first career playoff clincher after 1,062 career games; and 37-year-old captain Jordan Staal took home the Conn Smythe as the oldest MVP in NHL history.

The core returns largely intact: Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov anchor the offense, Jaccob Slavin holds down the blue line, and Logan Stankoven — the breakout star who led the team with 11 playoff goals after arriving in the Mikko Rantanen trade — headlines a young wave alongside Seth Jarvis. Frederik Andersen has moved on to Edmonton, which hands Bussi the crease full time. Sportsbooks have Carolina at +750 to repeat, second only to Colorado.

The Team Everyone Is Chasing: Colorado

The Avalanche open as the betting favorite at +700 — and the numbers back it up. Colorado won the Presidents’ Trophy with 121 points last season, powered by the Hart Trophy tandem of Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, with Martin Necas adding another dimension on the wing and Mackenzie Blackwood & Scott Wedgewood splitting the crease. Health derailed last spring’s playoff run after a fast start; if the core stays on the ice, Colorado is the team to beat.

An 84-Game Season: The New Normal

For the first time since 1993-94, the NHL regular season expands — from 82 to 84 games — with two extra dates for every team. That means more hockey across an October-to-April marathon that ends Saturday, April 10. The league also goes global: Carolina and Seattle open the Global Series in Helsinki (Nov. 12 & 14), while Ottawa and Chicago headline the Germany leg in Düsseldorf (Dec. 18 & 20). The Heritage Classic returns to Winnipeg on Oct. 25, the Winter Classic sends Utah and Colorado to Rice-Eccles Stadium on New Year’s Eve, and Dallas hosts Vegas in the Stadium Series at AT&T Stadium on Feb. 20.

More games, more travel, more chances — and less margin for error. For fans it means a busier calendar and more reasons to own the right jersey for every night of the week.

The Offseason Shake-Up

No summer in recent memory changed the landscape this fast. Gavin McKenna went No. 1 overall to the Toronto Maple Leafs — and could make his NHL debut on opening night against Montreal. Brady Tkachuk was traded from Ottawa to Florida on June 21, finally joining brother Matthew on the same Panthers roster, with Jacob Markstrom arriving in net. Alex Ovechkin signed a one-year extension with Washington and enters his 22nd season chasing the game’s biggest milestones, with his home opener set for Oct. 7 against Pittsburgh.

Edmonton added Mike Babcock behind the bench and brought in goaltender Frederik Andersen after trading Darnell Nurse to San Jose. John Carlson moved to Tampa Bay. Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Kirill Kaprizov all locked in long-term extensions this summer, and Leo Carlsson — after signing the richest offer sheet in league history with Philadelphia — was matched by Anaheim to stay put. Vegas, fresh off its Final run, hands the bench to Ryan Craig.

The Next Generation Takes the Ice

Connor Bedard enters year four in Chicago as the Blackhawks’ franchise face. Macklin Celebrini — the Calder runner-up — leads a Sharks rebuild that suddenly has teeth. Matthew Schaefer returns as the reigning Calder Trophy winner on Long Island. And in Toronto, all eyes are on McKenna, the most anticipated Maple Leafs debut in decades. Add a healthy Auston Matthews wearing the captain’s C, and the league’s offensive star power has never been deeper.

The 2027 All-Star Weekend takes over UBS Arena on Feb. 5-6, with the game’s brightest names under 25 battling in the Skills event — a preview of the next decade of hockey.

Games to Circle on the Calendar

Opening night alone is loaded: the Hurricanes raise their banner against Florida (5 p.m. ET, ESPN), Toronto hosts Montreal in an Original Six clash (7 p.m., Sportsnet), Boston welcomes the Rangers, Edmonton debuts Babcock against Vancouver, and Vegas hosts Chicago to close the night (10:30 p.m.). Then comes the Flyers-Penguins rematch on Sept. 30, the Heritage Classic in Winnipeg on Oct. 25, the Winter Classic on Dec. 31, and the Stadium Series showdown in Dallas on Feb. 20. The Stanley Cup Playoffs begin in mid-April, and the Final will crown a champion in late June.

Whatever your team, the 84-game season gives you two more nights of hockey than ever before. Pick your jersey, mark the calendar and get ready for a marathon.
